Does not make sense.But, I am thinking probably a good idea to send the fluxgate in anyway. All it needed was directed coercive force. It is displaying the right course.And work it does, like a champ! Better than it has EVER worked in 1 1/2 years.It is steering downwind in 20 knots now, helm moving under it's control better than I have ever seen.I am just completely floored. Woohoo!I get out of the bay and set my course, 340 magnetic.The S1 is now displaying between 21 and 29 degrees.So fuck it, can a fluxgate compass be stuck? Is that physically possible?I grab the chunk of wood, go down and whap it pretty good, just a little less hard than would be required to smash it, about 4 times.Go back up, and magic.
After telling Simrad about this they sent a new compass and the box was white not black and did not get so hot on a sunny windless day any more.So at least with Simrad they can overheat.I now have a S 1 tiller pilot and the fluxgate makes lots of clunking noises when you tilt it. Suspected heat and to test we sprayed cold water on the compass and sure enough it would cool it enough and then start working normallly. Turn it off for half an hour and it would work normal.
